Johnathon Whittaker: Sculpting Nature, Inspired by the Sea
Devon-based artist and sculptor Johnathon Whittaker creates striking abstract works that combine wood, stainless steel, concrete, and other metals, crafting unique forms that celebrate balance, symmetry, and nature's beauty. Working from his Plymouth studio, Johnathon's instinctive process allows each piece to reveal its hidden lines, curves, and textures, often enhanced with polished finishes or vibrant colour.
Raised on the island of Barbados, Johnathon developed a deep affinity for the ocean and the natural world through his early career as a commercial and recreational diver. This lifelong connection to nature continues to inspire his sculptural work.
With a background in Civil Engineering, Johnathon blends technical expertise with artistic vision, frequently collaborating with architects and interior designers to create bespoke pieces for private and public spaces.
His work has been featured in numerous wood carving publications, won multiple awards, and been showcased in national press and live interviews. In 2020, his "carving marathon" in support of the NHS saw him create and donate hand-carved plaques to 736 hospitals and medical centres across England—a project that earned him national recognition and a Point of Light award from the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street.
Johnathon's sculptures celebrate both raw material and refined craftsmanship, inviting viewers to experience the enduring connection between nature, form, and creativity.
