Tom Butler: The Art of Storytelling Through Collage
Tom Butler’s striking collages transform everyday materials into captivating cityscapes, where a crossword puzzle might become a high-rise or a wine label a church spire. His imaginative approach infuses each piece with depth, humour, and intrigue.
A pivotal moment in Tom’s artistic journey came in 2004 during a visit to Uzès, France, where he was mesmerized by the weathered textures, bold colours, and faded hand-painted adverts on old buildings. This sparked his signature use of text in paintings, a theme that continues to evolve through his travels to Paris, New York, Havana, Venice, and the Cornish coast.
With a 1st class honours degree in Illustration, Tom draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, from Monet and Cezanne to Kandinsky and Rockwell. His work brilliantly captures the essence of a place, blending traditional influences with contemporary creativity to produce truly unforgettable art.
