Martin: A Passion for Light, Life, and Portraiture
Born in Montrose, Scotland, in 1951, Martin has called Weymouth, Dorset, home since childhood. A self-taught artist working primarily in oils on canvas, he has painted professionally since 2003, developing a distinctive style that balances realism with expressive depth.
For over a decade, Martin ran his own gallery near Weymouth Harbour, showcasing his diverse portfolio. In 2016, he transitioned to focusing exclusively on exhibitions and private commissions. His work encompasses coastal scenes, landscapes, wildlife, still life, and figurative subjects, but his greatest passion lies in portraiture—particularly the female form.
Martin strives for realism without the constraints of a photographic appearance, working from life and reference photos to capture intricate skin tones and raw emotion. Inspired by the shifting natural light of the south coast, his evocative, thought-provoking pieces invite the viewer into a world of quiet intensity and beauty.
Welcoming commission inquiries, Martin continues to refine his craft, creating works that celebrate both the power of nature and the depth of human expression.
