Essex-born artist John Horsewell developed a love for art at an early age, influenced by a strong family tradition of professional artists that included his parents and grandfather. During his school years, he explored a wide range of media, eventually discovering that oil paint best suited his approach, allowing him to capture the interplay of light and shadow central to his work.
After leaving school, Horsewell pursued a career in interior design while continuing to paint and exhibit in his spare time. He showed his work extensively—initially locally, and later in major cities including Manchester, Birmingham, and London. In 1978, he committed to painting as a full-time profession, a decision that has led to a long and successful career.
Horsewell is best known for painting landscapes inspired by places he knows and loves, from the vistas of Southern Europe to the tranquil shores of Florida, where he spends much of his time. Using both brushes and palette knives, his paintings are characterised by rich texture and a confident, expressive technique.
Now working from his studio on the Essex–Suffolk border, Horsewell continues to explore and celebrate the natural world, with an approach that remains dynamic and ever evolving.
