Jack Frame: Nature’s Harmonious Rhythm
Jack Frame’s exquisite tree paintings capture the timeless patterns and inherent beauty of the natural world. From the strength and solidity of a mighty oak to the delicate, frothy blossom of a flowering cherry, each piece represents a search for balance, proportion, and tonal harmony. By isolating his subjects within simple, elemental spaces, Jack invites us to contemplate the iconic symbolism of trees and find solace in their enduring presence.
Jack’s artistic process is rooted in authenticity and connection to nature. Preferring to paint en plein air rather than in the confines of a studio, he immerses himself in the landscape, allowing each composition to become a first hand record of time spent contemplating his subject. This method infuses his work with a sense of time and place, capturing not only the visual essence of the scene but also its spirit. For Jack, painting is an opportunity “to be present, to be a part of the world.”
His style is an eclectic blend of influences, ranging from the intricate detail of Bosch to the pastoral serenity of Constable, and from medieval painting techniques to the refined elegance of Japanese screen printing. This rich tapestry of inspiration is layered with his passion for philosophy, poetry, and theology, bringing a depth of intention and romantic refinement to his work.
Jack’s technique involves a harmonious fusion of oils and acrylics layered over metal leaf backgrounds, creating a vivid, textured display with depth and spontaneity. Embracing traditional artisan processes such as gilding, enameling, and marbling, his work evokes the striking intensity of Chinese and Japanese silk paintings, with colours that shimmer and vibrate with energy.
Born in Kent in 1983 to Scottish parents, Jack graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2007, where his degree show was a sell-out success. His accolades include the GSA Painting Prize, the Standard Life Award, and the Jolomo Award for Landscape Painting in 2009. International recognition followed, and his work has attracted a dedicated collector base, including Hollywood star Kate Hudson, writer and broadcaster Muriel Gray, and Muse’s Matt Bellamy. Now, Jack divides his time between rural Norfolk and Glasgow, continually inspired by the dynamic interplay of colour, surface, shape, and form.
“The interaction between colour, surface, shape and form… how these dynamic elements vibrate against one another to make visual rhythm and generate a real sense of energy is something I find endlessly fascinating.”
