Dale Bowen: A Journey from Ceramics to Canvas
Dale Bowen is a master of both pottery and painting, blending technical expertise with an imaginative, whimsical style. Born in Staffordshire in 1963, where he still resides, he developed a passion for art from an early age and went on to study at Newcastle-under-Lyme College.
With over two decades in the ceramics industry, Dale honed his skills at Coalport China and later at Wedgwood, where he worked in the prestigious Prestige Department. Here, he created one-of-a-kind, highly decorative pieces for collectors, with some commanding prices in excess of £100,000. His craftsmanship led to exclusive exhibitions in New York, Washington, San Francisco, and Japan, as well as earning a master’s degree in ceramics from Staffordshire University.
Dale’s artistic talents have been recognized through prestigious commissions, including Coalport’s 250th anniversary, the Queen Mother’s 100th birthday celebrations, and the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar. His work was even presented to Her Majesty The Queen on board HMS Victory.
Despite his long-standing career in ceramics, Dale’s first love has always been painting. His vibrant, playful originals are bursting with colour and texture, captivating both adults and children alike. Hidden details—animals, people, and vehicles—bring his whimsical landscapes to life, while the humorous titles of each piece reflect his deep affection for his subjects.
Dale describes the artistic process as self-propelling and all-consuming, with inspiration striking in unexpected ways. His joy in painting is evident in every brushstroke, and this infectious energy has made his work beloved by collectors across the country.
