Alex McGarry: Capturing the Wild Spirit

Growing up in rural Hampshire, Alex McGarry developed a deep love for British wildlife, drawing endless inspiration from the natural world right outside her door. Known for her distinctive style of painterly realism, Alex’s work combines traditional subjects with contemporary flair, emphasizing texture and visible brushstrokes to honour the spirit rather than the photographic likeness of each animal.

Alex’s passion for wildlife art began early, guided by her father, renowned artist Pip McGarry. Despite no formal training, her natural talent flourished, leading her to establish a successful studio in Hampshire. Using oils to achieve rich, creamy textures and depth of colour, Alex carefully crafts her pieces from field sketches, photographs, and quick studies made during outdoor expeditions.

Her remarkable work has earned her numerous accolades, including the Fine Art Trade Guild's Up and Coming Artist of the Year 2019 and Best in Show at Mottisfont Abbey. In 2023, she was appointed Artist in Residence at The Hawk Conservancy Trust. Alex’s paintings are exhibited in galleries nationwide and collected by wildlife art enthusiasts around the world.
